President’s Message

Hi everyone,

I hope this message finds you contented after a wonderful holiday season and resting ahead of what promises to be a busy 2018.

As your seed grower representatives, the Alberta Seed Growers board of directors have spent much of this past year working on the future of our industry. This includes contributing to discussions on the Seed Synergy Collaboration Project and working with our fellow provincial commissions, and others in the crop and seed industry, on fusarium head blight management strategies.

As we carry your messages forward on important policy issues, we always remember our core value that, “Your Voice Is Our Direction.” With that in mind, I’m proud to announce that we have listened to our members’ feedback and moved our annual gathering to the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. This new venue and date (February 24-26, 2018) will give you and your family a chance to spend a weekend in beautiful Banff.

With our AGM beginning on February 25, 2018, we have decided to try something new this year and encourage our members to bring your whole family and have access to a winter wonderland for a full day ahead of the business meeting. The first-ever ASG Family Event will kick off on Saturday, February 24 with an optional activity: snow tubing at the Mount Norquay ski hill in Banff. This will be followed by a dinner back at the Banff Centre’s Kinnear Centre, where we can congregate and share stories of our day.

The following two days will feature critical updates on our important work outlined above, and thought-provoking presentations from industry members and outsiders.

This will all culminate with a presentation at our Sunday evening banquet by the enthusiastic and dynamic duo Julie and Lowell Taylor. Lowell suffers from Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) that has required him to adjust to decreasing sight his entire life. He is now legally blind with no peripheral vision, reduced central vision, and no vision in low light. Lowell was the first visually impaired contestant in Amazing Race’s history, and Julie and Lowell completed seven out of the eleven legs on season four of the Amazing Race Canada. Lowell now has his sights set on competing in road and track cycling at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Our theme for our 89th AGM Is “Building Partnerships” and we feel that these two will be the perfect complement to our message of teamwork and building a better industry with our colleagues.

So how do you take part? It is easy! Visit asgagm2018.eventbrite.ca and sign up today. There is no better way to have a voice in your industry than to show up, network, and have some fun along the way.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Ward Oatway
President, Alberta Seed Growers
